Please note: Quarterly Book Sales and donation drop-offs have been temporarily suspended!*

*The Book Cellar has suffered significant water damage during the latest winter storm, and regrettably, the Friends of the Bend Libraries must halt its quarterly book sales until further notice.
At the present time, we have no space available to store book donations and ask for your help by not dropping items at the Downtown Branch, the East Bend Branch, or The Cellar.  We would appreciate you holding onto your books until we are able  to accept them again, but if this isn’t possible, we encourage you to check with the Friends of the Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver or LaPine branches regarding their drop-off locations and times.
It is our goal to be “back in business” as soon as possible, and we appreciate your continued support as we search for a new location and rebuild our inventory.
Please stay tuned to our website for further updates.

Our Book Sales take place in the basement of the Library Admin building, located one block south of the Downtown Branch library. The stairway and elevator entrance is located on the Idaho Avenue side (on the left side of this picture.)

Seeking a good read or ideas for your book club? Find your next read here; we have many recent publications. Further, we have many one-of-a-kind items you didn’t know you wanted to read/experience until you stumbled upon one or more at a FOBL sale. Shoppers find wonderful books (typically, many good ones remain after main sale) and walk out with amazing bargains. It’s a literary treasure hunt!

The Friends host four very popular book sales each year and all proceeds from our sales are for the support of the Bend Libraries programs. Each sale runs for two days and typically offers on the average 15,000 very desirable books. Our team works year round to prepare for each sale. They receive donated books from the public, carefully select the books that will be in the sale, sort them and shelve them into genres. Library discards make up a portion of the books.

FOBL members have exclusive admission at 9:00am on the first day of each sale. At 10:30am the sales open to everyone. If you would like to secure your early admission, you can join the Friends by using this membership application  and sending it in with your check. Or you can become a member at the door on the day of the sale.

Adults’ Book Sales:
The books for adults are in the “cellar” of the Admin Building, and there is an abundance of items in these categories.

•Best sellers
•Mysteries
•Novels
•Crafts
•CDs and Records
•Audiobooks
•Biographies
•Classics
•Eastern religion
•Military History
•DVDs

We have a huge selection of CDs (lots of classical and jazz), audio books and DVDs.

Most items cost $1.00, although some (new releases, hard-to-find titles, classics) may be priced slightly higher. These special items have orange price stickers on their spines or covers.

Children’s Book Sales:
On the first day of each sale the children’s book sale is held in the Admin Building’s Conference Room on the north side of the building, adjacent to the parking lot. Children’s books and most DVDs and CDs cost $1.00. Plus, we’ll have a few free children’s books to entice young readers!

The Half-Price Sale:
The second day of each sale, always on Sundays, runs from 1:00 to 4:00pm. This is when books are half price, excluding orange-stickered books.

Recently, the FOBL Board voted to end the Sunday “Bag Sale” and replace it with a “50% Off Sale”. All items selling for $1.00 on day-one of a Book Sale will be half-price on the following day. Why? All funds raised at FOBL Book Sales help to expand Bend Library’s efforts to encourage readership that starts in early childhood and continues through every stage of life. FOBL funds make a real difference. Unfortunately, Book Sale revenues have been declining. Trends favoring electronic media have reduced the quantity of books being donated. With less “inventory”, we no longer have the same need to clear our shelves to make room for new items. The FOBL believes that a 50% Off Sale will maintain the level of funding we’ve historically provided to Bend’s Library system while, at the same time, giving our customers the opportunity to buy excellent books at well below market prices.

Where Do the Donated Books Come From?  You!
If you have books that you are ready to donate, bring them on! The books we sell are books donated by you throughout the year. Since this is such a popular process we ask that you help us by reading the Book Donation Guidelines before bringing them to either the Downtown or the East Bend branch of the library. If you have three or more boxes of books please bring them to the book sale room in the basement of the Admin building on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:00pm. And we thank you profusely!

Help wanted for the Book Sales:

At the Book Sales: We need volunteer FOBL members for each day of our book sales to cashier, assist customers or straighten up the shelves. If you have the ability to lift a box of books you will find yourself much in demand! If you’d like to help at a sale please leave a message for Pat via our Contact Us page. You will enjoy meeting new Friends and getting our treasures  into buyers’ hands!

Ongoing help moving boxes of books: Every Wednesday from 1:00-3:00pm we process donated items for our sales and we need help moving boxes (using a dolly). If you can help with this or recycling books and cardboard, please visit our Contact Us page and send a message for Toby.
